Dr. D Walter Hiott, M.D. is a physician in the field of psychiatry with a specialization in the field of child and adolescent psychiatry. He is certified by the National Board of Medical Examiners, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology for both General Adult Psychiatry and for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Walter Hiott was trained at the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine, where he graduated from Medical School, and where he performed his internship, residency, and fellowship. During these years as a student of medicine, Dr. Hiott earned many honors and awards. As a medical student, he received a MUSC Student Government Achievement Award for Leadership. As a resident, Walter Hiott was the Chief Resident in Psychiatry, received an AMA-Burroughs Wellcome Award for outstanding community service, and was a state delegate for the AMA Resident Physician Section.
After his fellowship, Walter Hiott became a Medical University of South Carolina Department of Psychiatry faculty member, a position in which he excelled and was highly lauded. He received two Circle of Excellence Awards, one for Best Clinical Teaching for the Senior Psychiatry Clerkship, the other for Outstanding Lecturer for the Junior Psychiatry Clerkship. He also won the Chairman’s Award for Outstanding Faculty Member three times, two Best Faculty Teacher Awards for Third Year Medical Student Clerkship, was given a Best Faculty Special Recognition Award by psychiatry residents, and was nominated for a Golden Apple Award for medical student education.
Dr. Walter Hiott has also worked at Palmetto Lowcountry Behavioral Solution, and continues to work at the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center and the South Carolina Department of Mental Health.
